A native of London, Julian Opie is a pop artist who was a key member of the Young British Artists (YBAs), a group of visual artists who led the renaissance of contemporary British art. Known by the cover of a compilation album by English Britpop band , Opie works by simplifying images he sourced from photographs or videos into black lines and intense colors through drawing or computer manipulation. He then presents them as Pop Art in a wide variety of mediums such as canvas, LED, LCD, and sculpture.

Opie began working on minimalistic landscape paintings that are in a dramatic contrast between a natural environment and artificial subject matter before he addressed the primary subject matter of his works such as figures and animals in 1997. His major subject matter included empty roads, seashores, and fields. I dreamt I was driving my car (village) features a village viewed from a speeding car, displaying an awkward landscape by underscoring the flatness in solid colors and lines and excluding any perspective. This landscape in which his typical black outlines and intense colors are excluded seems to represent a specific place, but conveys only the impression of a landscape.
